For those working in the mining industry, lighting can be a life or death proposition. Miners depend on visual cues to detect threats related to falls to the ground, slips/trips/falls (STFs), moving machinery and other safety hazards.
Though major mining countries have their own unique set of standards regarding safe mining lights, the parameters are usually established by type of mining being done.
LED lighting technology has emerged as the technology of choice because LEDs do not have glass coverings or filaments that can break.
LED lights are also more efficient because they can provide around 50,000 hours of useful light, nearly 50 times more than the other available technologies. Though it varies from country to country, lighting devices are usually tested in government facilities. There are set guidelines for the amount of illumination needed in mines and these guidelines vary according to the workplaces.... More

Retail partners in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants Interior Lighting Campaign met their energy goals this year, demonstrating that companies can cut costs with smart energy choices and driving lighting contractors to upgrade interior lighting.
“This hugely successful program involves thousands of facilities and has helped them avoid millions of metric tons of carbon emissions and save billions of dollars in energy costs. The progress that our Better Plants partners have made throughout the administration indicates that American companies are committed to reducing the energy footprint of their operations,” said Ernest Moniz, energy secretary. “That commitment is essential for America to continue making important strides toward a low-carbon future.”... Warehouse lighting retrofits usually involve LED or fluorescent high bay or low bay lighting fixtures.
When retrofitting warehouse lighting fixtures with LEDs or fluorescents, lighting contractors should start by evaluating the existing lighting system to determine how the newer lighting fixtures can be best integrated into an older high pressure sodium or metal halide warehouse lighting plan.
Selecting the right lighting contractors, designers and suppliers can be half the battle, since they’re aware of how the latest warehouse high bay lighting fixtures can positioned to achieve the right lighting design and energy efficiency goals.
The best lighting contractors can perform warehouse lighting retrofits that take full advantage of advances in energy management based on the latest standards and regulations. For example, though LED high bay lighting has made rapid advances, it is not automatically the best solution for every warehouse – so managers shouldn’t be quick to do full LED warehouse lighting retrofits before fully understanding all the costs and options.... LED high bay lighting is getting more affordable.
For years, LED lighting industry experts have proclaimed LEDs the wave of the future when costs ultimately come down, while LED lighting price was always just out of reach.
Well costs have definitely come down. For many commercial and industrial lighting contractors, the time for LED lighting retrofits has finally arrived.
In the commercial and industrial lighting world, manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to affect the bottom line – with energy consumption and long-term maintenance costs often being low hanging fruit for efficiency experts and energy service companies (ESCOs).
If you’re looking for high bay LED lighting for sale, this buyer’s guide compares fixtures from top manufacturers.
Lighting contractors say lighting represents up to 37% of a typical warehouse’s monthly electricity consumption expense. A properly designed and executed LED high bay lighting retrofit can reduce energy usage by up to 60% – making a significant difference in a company’s bottom line.... More

In the lighting industry, the CFL vs LED debate favors LEDs as the wave of the future. But based on the economics, CFL light bulbs continue to be popular.
The most common CFL light bulbs for retrofits are:
CFL Spiral Bulbs are screw-in base bulbs most often found with medium Edison (E-26) bases and integral ballasts; these can be used in common household fixtures that are designed for incandescent bulbs such as table lamps, ceiling fixtures, and wall sconces.
Decorative CFL Bulbs or Globe Lamps are similar to spiral lamps, but feature a globe or other decorative shape enclosing the actual CFL lamp. These are used in more decorative fixtures where the lamp is visible such as bathroom and ceiling lighting.
CFL Flood Lamps also have a screw-in base, and are designed to focus light on the objects in front of them. They are commonly used in indoor fixtures such as recessed or enclosed down lights as well as outdoor floodlights.... More

In many lighting scenarios, using dust or vapor proof fluorescent light fixtures to protect the light source from harsh elements and other threatening conditions can be a challenge.
Parking garages, tunnels, temporary construction lighting, food processing, walk-in freezers, stairwells, car washes, farms and barns, subways, laundry facilities, sports arenas, and oil and gas drilling operations all present unique challenges to the lighting system designer that vapor proof fixtures solve.
More often than not, the solution involves using vapor proof fluorescent high bay light fixtures.... More

High bay lighting systems are changing, ushering in a new era of energy-efficient commercial lighting fixtures. When comparing fluorescent vs LED costs or lumens for commercial and industrial facilities, remember that retrofitting your high bay lighting with either of these options is a great way to minimize electricity consumption.
When retrofitting high bay lighting fixtures for factories, warehouses, big box stores and gyms, switching from the legacy metal halides to fluorescent or LED fixtures can generate up to 50 percent in energy savings as well as providing instant-on and restrike features, improved color qualities and emergency ballasting options....
